Did a high school coach hug a school shooter and therefore prevent a mass shooting?

The claim first circulated on X (formerly known as Twitter) and it was captioned as follows:

Keonon (sic) Lowe, the high school coach who stopped a mass shooting by disarming the kid and offering a hug. A hero in every sense

A similar report appeared on an India news site here.

FACT CHECK

The incident happened on May 17th 2019 at Parkrose High School where an 18 year old student had brought a loaded gun to school intending to commit suicide with the gun as reported by court documents.

Angel Granados-Diaz was confronted and subsequently disarmed by Keanon Lowe (seen wearing a cap in the video), the football coach at Parkrose High School and a former football star at the University of Oregon.

A teacher wearing white pants is then seen taking away the gun while the coach hugs the young man with the gun.

The coach, Keanon Lowe, went ahead and tweeted about the situation a day later on his personal Twitter account (now X)

VERDICT

According to court documents, it was not a mass school shooting event that was intended but rather a suicide.

Be aware that several accounts may try to pass the event as a mass school shooting event but it is important to know the full context before being baited.
